Born in Bulgaria, Michael Petrov studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Louise Hopkins, winning the Gold Medal in 2014 and the Wigmore Hall Prize in 2017. He was selected by the Young Classical Artists Trust in 2013 and won 2nd Prize in the 2012 International Brahms Competition in Austria and 1st Prize in the 2011 International Suggia Competition in Porto. As a soloist Michael has appeared with the Philharmonia, Bournemouth Symphony and CBSO Youth Orchestras, as well as the Munich Chamber and English Chamber Orchestras, and has worked with conductor such as Edward Gardner and Rory MacDonald. A passionate chamber musician, Michael is also a member of the critically acclaimed Trio Isimsiz. The trio’s first CD was released in 2017 and in 2018 they won a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship Award. In the UK, Trio Isimsiz regularly appears at venues such as Wigmore Hall and Snape Maltings.
Michael will be joined on the night by Claire Alsop our outstanding accompanist for the series.
Claire studied music at Bristol University, during which time she was an Organ scholar at Bristol Cathedral. On graduating, Claire was appointed Organist of Cheltenham Ladies College, where she worked until 2001. She gained FRCO diploma in 2006, winning the Turpin Prize. Claire is assistant organist at St Mary Redcliffe Church and enjoys a range of music making including teaching, ABRSM examining, accompanying and solo work, and has broadcast live on both BBC Radio 3 and BBC 1.
Each event takes place in the Cresswell Theatre at Bristol Cathedral Choir School and starts at 5.30pm, with a short informal recital from the visiting artists. This is followed by an open masterclass until 8pm, in which advanced students perform and receive coaching, everyone is encouraged to watch.
There are 8 spaces available to be a performer within the masterclass and they must be of a standard of Grade 5 or above.
