Rosie Biss is Principal Cellist of the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has performed throughout Europe and America, broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, WDR 3 and performed at major music festivals including Edinburgh, Aspen, Verbier and Schleswig-Holstein. She has guest led the Cello sections of many of the UK’s leading orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestras. In addition to performing, Rosie teaches at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, coaches for the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain, and gives annual masterclasses at Cellofest.
Rosie will be joined on the night by Claire Alsop our outstanding accompanist for the series.
Claire studied music at Bristol University, during which time she was an Organ scholar at Bristol Cathedral. On graduating, Claire was appointed Organist of Cheltenham Ladies College, where she worked until 2001. She gained FRCO diploma in 2006, winning the Turpin Prize. Claire is assistant organist at St Mary Redcliffe Church and enjoys a range of music making including teaching, ABRSM examining, accompanying and solo work, and has broadcast live on both BBC Radio 3 and BBC 1.
Each event takes place in the Cresswell Theatre at Bristol Cathedral Choir School and starts at 5.30pm, with a short informal recital from the visiting artists. This is followed by an open masterclass until 8pm, in which advanced students perform and receive coaching, everyone is encouraged to watch.
There are 8 spaces available to be a performer within the masterclass and they must be of a standard of Grade 5 or above.
