We’re excited to kick off the first of our 2018/19 Masterclass series with a focus on the Clarinet!
We’re looking forward to Nick Carpenter, Head of Woodwind at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama joining us for this first masterclass. Before joining the RWCMD Nick spent 10 years as a Principal Clarinet of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta and 18 years as a member of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. During this time he also appeared as guest principal with many of the UK’s leading orchestras, including a brief spell as Principal Clarinet of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Nick has given masterclasses all over the world, and has been professor of Clarinet at the Guildhall school of Music & Drama since 2008.
Nick will be joined on the night by Claire Alsop our outstanding accompanist for the series.
Claire studied music at Bristol University, during which time she was an Organ scholar at Bristol Cathedral. On graduating, Claire was appointed Organist of Cheltenham Ladies College, where she worked until 2001. She gained FRCO diploma in 2006, winning the Turpin Prize. Claire is assistant organist at St Mary Redcliffe Church and enjoys a range of music making including teaching, ABRSM examining, accompanying and solo work, and has broadcast live on both BBC Radio 3 and BBC 1
Each event takes place in the Cresswell Theatre at Bristol Cathedral Choir School and starts at 5.30pm, with a short informal recital from the visiting artists. This is followed by an open masterclass until 8pm, in which advanced students perform and receive coaching, everyone is encouraged to watch.
There are 10 spaces available to be a performer within the masterclass and they must be of a standard of Grade 5 or above.
